Bring Your Own Theatre (BYOT) Productions is Chicago's longest standing 24 hour play-based theatre company. The monthly BYOT shows consist of five original plays and one special act all produced in less than 24 hours and premiered in venues across Chicago. The last weekend of every month a different venue and theme are chosen. The writers crank out pieces in the 12 hours between Friday evening and the early hours of Saturday morning - and within next 12 hours between Saturday morning and evening, the creative team arrives at the venue to bring the pieces to life visually as the directors and performers read, conceptualize, rehearse, and finalize their performances for the audience that same evening.

Medea: Hell Hath No Fury

Medea: Hell Hath No Fury is a loose adaptation of the ancient Greek tragedy written by Euripides for a political theatre class taught by Angela Sweigart-Gallagher at NEIU in Spring 2015 (April 29, 2015). 

We used the shell of Medea and created a Brechtian piece about spousal abuse with satire.

Medea is a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides based on a myth. It was first performed in 431 BC as part of a trilogy, the other plays of which have not survived. It begins in a state of conflict. Its plot centers on the actions of Medea, a former princess of the kingdom of Colchis and the wife of Jason. Jason has abandoned his wife, Medea, along with their two children. He hopes to advance his station by remarrying with Glauce, the daughter of Creon, king of Corinth, the Greek city where the play is set. Medea finds her position in the world threatened as Jason leaves her for the Princess of Corinth, Glaunce and takes vengeance on him by murdering his new wife and her own two sons, before escaping to Athens to start a new life.

In March 2016, I took the original script/ concept and incorporated edits and changes.

From February to May 2015 research was conducted by the original workshop participants and findings were used to adapt a free use version of the source material. We workshopped the full piece several times in the process.

This is an excerpt from the play, and it is the second scene in the play.

A woman (Amy) manages to temporarily withhold a life changing announcement from Jeremy, her longtime live-in boyfriend. This short play gives a modern spin on the "I Love Lucy" shtick that Lucille Ball mastered, bringing it to a new audience. Stepping from the shoes of a writer into the shoes of motherhood, is the least of Amy's worries as her best friend Linda pushes her to the brink of blurting it out.
